Upcoming Facebook Changes

July 20, 2017

Facebook made some changes this month that may be impacting the appearance of certain page posts. It removed page owners’ ability to customize link data (headline, description and image) that are automatically created when linking to a web page. In the past, we have been able to modify both the image and text if it doesn’t look good automatically. So for example, you may no longer be able to edit the area outlined in red below or place a custom photo:

Facebook explained that “By removing the ability to customize link metadata (i.e., headline, description, image) from all link sharing entry points on Facebook, we are eliminating a channel that has been abused to post false news. We also understand that many publishers have workflows that rely on overwriting link preview metadata to customize how their content appears to audiences on Facebook.”

Facebook will continue to make announcements as this change rolls out. They also say that while there may be some initial challenges, they will continue working on a solution for content publishers.

If BroadBased is your social media community manager, we’ll do what is within our power to mitigate any major visual differences in page posts.
